Goodbye to Summer
Yes, I know summer isn't completely over, but the end of our summer vacations are!
We headed up to the Thousand Islands for a long Labor Day weekend last week. Originally, it was going to be just our little family with the possibility of the family of a friend coming along, but Daniel threw a wrench into that plan! ;-) Seriously, we found out Daniel was coming to Syracuse (only an hour and a half south of the Islands) to meet his girlfriend's family and our friends decided it was too long a drive for a short period of time (their girls went back to school on the day after Labor Day) so plans changed! It was great - Leda got to spend time with her Grandparents and Uncle Dan and we all got to meet Maggie!
We took off Thursday night after work and arrived around 11pm or so. Brock and Pam were waiting for us and Leda woke up before I could get her into bed without her knowing we had arrived, so we were up until around 12:30 tiring out the kid! We spent most of Friday just relaxing and Leda spent it charming the heck out of her Grandpa and Nana! Friday was a beautiful day, and had we known how not so beautiful the rest of the weekend would be (weather-wise), we might had spent more time outside!
Friday night we had dinner out with friends of Brock and Pam's. Leda was her charming little self and did behave herself pretty well. She did find the table behind us a lot more interesting! She also found the taste of decaffeinated coffee agreeable, especially if tasted by dipping her spoon into Mama's coffee and sucking the spoon - over and over and over again! She attempted the same thing with my red wine, but I was a lot quicker! We did, however, give her a very little taste of red wine (one drop on the tip of my finger) and she seemed to like it! That's the Irish in her, I am sure! (Oh, what the heck, we gave her three tastes of the wine - three little drops...call social services on us, see if I care! ;-) And, while you are at it, make sure they know about this:
Saturday was overcast when we woke up. Ernesto had worked his way into our vacation. We spent the day hanging out and playing with Leda. We headed down to Alex Bay for a little brunch and Brock, Leda and I took a walk around. It started to rain not too long into our walk, so off for the house were we stayed for the remainder of the day due to the rain, which was pretty hard at times. It was a good day for reading books! We had a little dinner at the house and got excited for Uncle Daniel's visit the next day.
Sunday we awoke to more rain. Uncle Daniel and Maggie arrived around noon and off to lunch/brunch we went. We had a nice little lunch and back to the house to hang out and relax. The rain eventually did stop, but the rest of the day was overcast and cool, so we spent the day hanging out with the family and watching Leda charm the boots off her Uncle Dan!
Sunday night we had a great dinner at home of steak and potatoes and corn on the cob. And you all know how Leda' loves corn on the cob. Well, she has apparently decided she likes to hold it herself now! Our little girl ate her own corn on the cob!
Monday we had lunch with our friends Dan and Debbie from Canada and then out to dinner with the family - are you seeing the trend here? Leda got quite used to eating out at least once a day (sometimes twice!) on our little vacation! She really was pretty well behaved (she did have her moments) and didn't seem to bother any of the other patrons of the restaurants we ate at! For lunch on Monday she tried calimari (and liked it!) and ketchup - oh, we have created a monster! she LOVES ketchup! On Monday night she ate like a champ, but wouldn't try the snails! ;-)
Tuesday was a fairly nice day - still overcast, but a little warmer than the rest of the weekend. We needed to take the boat and jetski down to the marina for wintering, so Leda and I suited up and jumped in the boat with Grandpa and Brock took Maggie for a ride on the jetski. We had a great time. Leda did seem to enjoy the ride! I think she's gonna be a boat kid!
After we took the boats back, Daniel and Maggie had to take off - Maggie had to get home to clean up for some visits by potential buyers and Daniel was going back to Portland. We loved getting to know Maggie and are very happy for her and Daniel! Maggie heads west to Portland at the end of the month!
After Dan and Maggie left, Brock, Leda and I headed off to the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton. We toured the La Duchesse - the Boldt's house boat at first, then owned by the McNally's (of the Rand McNallys) very cool boat! Saw lots of wood boats (Mama's favorites) and just had a good time walking around. Back home, we relaxed the rest of the day and had a nice relaxing dinner.
On Wednesday, we got packed up and after a quick lunch in Alex Bay and some pictures with the Grandparents, we headed home. Leda slept the first half, and the second half handled being cooped up in the car pretty well, until the last half hour. The screaming started, which had us trying everything we could to stop the screaming. Which turned into hysterical laughing! Much better than screaming!
All in all, other than the weather, we had a blast! It was nice to get away and relax and say goodbye to summer. We look forward to doing it again next year!
